Fair point that criticism often feels inconsistent, though "fighting for the country" might benefit from more specific reference to which policies you have in mind.
If he had a family trip planned months in advance, I don't see the problem - Congress doesn't need to sit around idle during shutdown negotiations anyway, that's what staff is for.
