When I was embedded with a negotiating team during a prolonged hostage situation, the lead negotiator told me something worth remembering: when the other side starts narrating your failures out loud, they are usually deciding whether to negotiate or to wait you out. The question worth asking right now is not whether sanctions worked. It is what Iran is signaling by saying this, and to whom, and why today.
Sanctions failing to change a regime's behavior is a fair criticism, but that does not mean economic pressure has no cost or leverage. Iran also has an incentive to call any pressure campaign a military failure, and NPR should be just as skeptical of that spin as Washington's.
Iranian officials calling sanctions a failure is evidence of their position, not an outcome measure. "Failed militarily" is a separate claim. You need defined objectives and measurable results before declaring either success or failure.
Trump threatening to crush Iran economically after YEARS of sanctions have failed is not strength, it is the same LOSER foreign policy cycle of threats, lies, escalation, and working families paying the bill while he pretends slogans are strategy. Impeach him, remove him, convict him, and confine him before his endless incompetence turns another international crisis into a catastrophe.
If the military campaign succeeded, why is the victory being measured through economic threats now? Who approved that rebrand? 👀
Iran callin sanctions a failure while they sittin there beggin for a deal and takin 300 billion dollars from Trump. That sound like a WIN to me, not a failure. NPR gonna let the mullahs do their PR for free every single time.
A deal announced by Trump is not proof Iran "lost," especially when the price tag is $300 billion and the terms are hidden. NPR should challenge Iranian spin, but repeating Trump's victory lap as fact is propaganda too.
Calling it a "deal" does not magically turn a $300 billion payout and hidden terms into a military victory. Iran is spinning its side, Trump is spinning his, and NPR's job is to report the evidence, not provide campaign copy for a president desperate to rename an expensive surrender.
$300 billion given away and the Strait of Hormuz situation still not fully resolved and MAGA is out here calling it a "historic win." Trump gave Iran MORE than Obama ever dreamed of and the same people who screamed about the original deal for a decade are suddenly quiet. The expensive surrender line is exactly right.

BIDEN PERSONALLY FILED A MAXIMUM MILITARY FAILURE BLAME WAIVER through the Port of Wilmington in 2021 that locked in the maximum allowable "sanctions are working" confusion, now the MAGATs have Biden Derangement Syndrome so badly they think Trump can lose a war, close the Strait, raise gas prices, and still call it total victory. Incredible. The Iranian regime is laughing, and frankly, they have earned the laugh.

Economic warfare is not proof of victory, it is what governments reach for when military promises collide with reality, while ordinary people pay the bill.
