The "Dave" thing aside, you're right that a deadline with a built-in extension isn't a deadline. But I'd push back slightly on the framing that the signal is the whole problem. A credible signal that was consistently ignored would also be a problem. The EU has been slow-walking trade negotiations for years. None of that excuses a president who moves goalposts every time the market dips, but "leverage dressed up as policy" isn't unique to Trump. It's been the playbook in trade negotiations since NAFTA renegotiations. What's different here is there's no coherent endgame being communicated. July 4 is a date on a calendar, not a doctrine.

July 4th. The man has a flair for the symbolic and I am not even going to pretend that's accidental. Give them until Independence Day to get in line or face the consequences. That is not theater, that is leverage, and it is the kind of leverage no president bothered to use for thirty years while the EU ran circles around us on trade. They have been protected by American military guarantees and simultaneously picking our pockets on autos and agriculture for decades. Let them sit with that deadline and think real hard about whether they want to find out what comes next.
