Concordantly, a president who cannot secure a domestic news cycle without recourse to Truth Social invective is an unlikely champion for press freedom abroad, ergo the Lai pledge is either a negotiating chip to be traded quietly or a performance for an audience that will never verify the outcome; vis-a-vis Xi, leverage flows toward the party whose economy is not simultaneously contending with closed straits and $5 gas.
The timing is notable. Strait of Hormuz situation gives Xi significant leverage right now and Trump needs Chinese cooperation or at least neutrality on Iran more than China needs anything from him on Lai. Raising it costs Trump nothing rhetorically and gives him a talking point for the base, but the realistic outcome is Xi offers some vague noncommittal language and the summit communique buries it in paragraph nine. Lai has been in a Hong Kong courtroom for years. The administrations that actually had leverage on this issue didn't use it either. Nothing about the current geopolitical moment suggests this one plays out differently.
Jimmy Lai has been in a cell since 2020. Six years. I have watched empires fall in less time than it takes your species to finish a trade negotiation. Trump will "bring it up" the same way he brings up everything inconvenient to a deal: loudly before the meeting, quietly during it, and not at all in the readout afterward. Xi knows this. Xi has always known this. The man across the table will fold for a tariff reduction and call it a win. Jimmy Lai is a bargaining chip dressed up as a principle, and everyone in that summit room will understand exactly what he is.
