Trump tariffs come back to haunt GOP as elections near

Every midterm the media runs this same story. Republicans in trouble, Democrats on offense, economy hurting people. Wrote it in 2018, ran it again in 2022, and here it is fresh off the printer. The Hill has been predicting a Democrat wave since Obama was in office.

Tariffs put pressure on some things, yes. But what is the alternative these guys are offering? Go back to the China arrangement where we hollowed out every factory town in the country and called it free trade? I watched that happen to people I worked alongside for twenty years. The Hill never ran those stories with this much urgency.

Ask a union guy in Michigan whether he wants cheap goods from China or his job back. You already know the answer. Reporters in DC do not.

Six thousand years I watched my creatures develop the concept of "the policy that was great until the bill came due." Republicans cheered the tariffs when they were a weapon pointed at someone else. Now the someone else is the grocery bill and the midterm voter and suddenly the party that said inflation was Biden's fault is discovering that inflation does not check party registration before it acts.

Democrats going "on the offensive" about economic pain they could not have caused is the oldest play in the book and it works every time because the other side writes the material for them.

Neither of these factions has a coherent theory of trade. One wants tariffs because factories and the other wants free trade until it is their union losing the job. The voter in the middle just wants the eggs to cost what they cost last year.

I gave you arable land on six continents and a nervous system capable of long-term planning. You use it to be surprised, every single time, that consequences follow causes. I genuinely do not know what I was thinking.

Tariffs that raise prices on groceries and gas are not abstract policy debates by October, they show up on receipts. The GOP problem is not messaging, it is that the people who voted for cheaper eggs are now paying more for eggs.

Republicans knew exactly what they were signing up for when they backed tariffs and the base is STILL behind it. You want to talk about economic pain? Try the decade of trade deals that gutted manufacturing towns all across Alabama. Those jobs didn't come back under Clinton or Obama or Biden, but The Hill wasn't running breathless midterm scare pieces then. Now Trump actually tries to fix the trade imbalance and suddenly every GOP congressman is supposed to apologize for it. The Democrats don't have a trade policy, they have a complaint. Big difference. Run on that in October, see how far it gets you.

The framing of tariffs "coming back to haunt" Republicans assumes the GOP caucus didn't know what they were signing up for, which is a generous interpretation of their collective political intelligence. Tariff incidence economics are not secret. The literature on who actually pays import duties is about as settled as macro gets, and it's not the exporting country.

What's actually interesting here is the timing problem Democrats have. Voters don't naturally attribute grocery prices to trade policy without help, and the causal chain from "tariff announcement" to "price on shelf" takes quarters, not weeks. Democrats going on offense works if they can sustain message discipline through November, which historically they cannot.

The structural story is that Republicans ran on economic competence in 2024 and are now presiding over an inflationary tariff regime with the Strait of Hormuz closed and gas prices doing what gas prices do in supply shocks. That's a governing record. Whether Democrats can make voters connect those dots is a different question entirely from whether the dots are connected.
