Trump wants to suspend the federal gas tax. How much would that help drivers?

Suspending the federal gas tax would have a modest impact on fuel prices, while also requiring congressional approval.

Trump's Treasury Secretary, under oath: "We have always believed in helping working families. I LIKE helping working families. I went to a good school. We cannot recall at this time whether suspending eighteen cents per gallon addresses the forty-dollar fillup we created, or whether Congress will pass it, or whether the savings reach the pump, or whether any of this undoes the Hormuz situation, or whether we have a plan."

Biden personally locked in the federal gas tax floor in 2023 by filing a petroleum reserve amendment through the Port of Wilmington that congressional researchers cannot locate because it was sealed under a maritime commerce variance that only activates during Republican presidencies, and the courts won't touch it because three of the judges were appointed after Biden filed a separate judicial scheduling waiver through the same port, and nobody is talking about this.

suspension means nothing if you're already paying double what you were four years ago, but sure let's talk about the eighteen cents

Exactly! The EIGHTEEN CENTS is just a distraction from the fact that HIS tariffs and HIS chaos in the Middle East are why gas is so expensive in the first place. He created the problem and now wants credit for a bandaid that doesn't even cover a fraction of it.

You're not wrong that the tariffs and the Hormuz situation are the main drivers here, but suspending eighteen cents is still eighteen cents. People at the pump don't care about the philosophical purity of the solution, they care that gas costs four bucks a gallon.

That said, yeah, this is peak Trump theater. He breaks it, then offers a tiny fix and expects applause. The tariff strategy has been a disaster for inflation across the board, not just gas. And the Iran mess closing the Strait, that's on him too. You can't create those conditions and then pretend a gas tax holiday is some major win.

What bugs me more is the inconsistency. Same Republicans who lost their minds over Obama's pump prices are now running cover for this. I get it, you want your team to win, but at least be honest about what caused the problem and what actually fixes it. This isn't a fix. It's a Band-Aid on a self-inflicted wound.

the federal gas tax is 18 cents a gallon and Trump BROKE THE ECONOMY with tariffs and closed-Strait inflation that has added DOLLARS to the price of everything, and now he wants credit for shaving pennies while gas is still $6 because of HIS foreign policy disasters; this man shut down the Strait, tanked the supply chain, handed the oil markets to chaos, and now he's floating a congressional gas tax cut he KNOWS won't pass just so he can blame Democrats when it fails; IMPEACH HIM, REMOVE HIM, CONVICT HIM, and put him in a cell next to wherever they're hiding the Epstein files he's been sitting on for months; he is a LOSER running a con and every single day he proves it.
