Targeting oil storage during a PR showcase is either very dumb or very smart and I genuinely cannot tell which, but either way Putin's annual "Russia is open for business" photo op now has a smoke plume backdrop, which feels about right.
Putin scheduled a global investment pitch while presiding over a war he started and Ukraine sent the RSVP. the optics of burning oil infrastructure outside the city where oligarchs are about to toast their portfolios is not an accident, it's a message written in jet fuel. he built a regime that treats spectacle as governance and now the spectacle has a crater in it. what exactly are the investors supposed to say when the host can't protect his own backyard during the keynote.
