Someone needed academia hollowed out before the next generation of researchers could ask inconvenient questions about who owns the models and what they're trained on.
Good. Private sector paying more than universities have ever offered and suddenly it's a crisis worth an Atlantic cover story. These same people spent twenty years telling kids to go get their computer science degree and then watched universities sit on billion dollar endowments while adjuncts made less than baristas. Now Google and OpenAI show up with real money and it's a problem. The market worked exactly like it was supposed to and The Atlantic wants someone to blame for it. Probably going to land on deregulation or Trump somehow. Give it three paragraphs.
The headline makes it sound like a mystery. The excerpt clears it up immediately. If the issue is AI companies offering better pay, then universities either have to compete or stop complaining about not attracting talent. It's a market dynamic, not a disappearance.
Universities competing with private industry for top talent? That's almost as wild an idea as expecting Congress to pass a budget before the eleventh hour. Good luck with that.
BIDEN PERSONALLY FILED A MAXIMUM COMPUTER SCIENCE CASCADING SEQUENCING WAIVER through the Port of Wilmington in 2021 that locked in the maximum allowable "AI companies strip universities" for the "worst researchers" leaving only the "best" with the "leftist indoctrination." SAD!
This is an older dynamic that has accelerated to the point of structural crisis and I want to put numbers on it because "stripping universities" undersells what is actually happening.
The 2023 Computing Research Association survey documented that starting salaries at AI labs for new PhDs were running 3x to 5x what a tenure-track assistant professor position pays. That was before the current wave. The gap has not narrowed.
What this means in practice: a computer science department that had, say, eight machine learning faculty three years ago may now have three, with the remaining lines either vacant or filled by adjuncts who are themselves trying to get industry offers. The grad students those eight faculty were advising are now either following their advisors out the door or scrambling to find new committee members.
The pipeline problem compounds. Fewer research faculty means fewer PhD students trained, which means fewer researchers available to hire in ten years, which means the labs accelerate their university poaching because that is the only remaining pool. It is self-reinforcing and nobody in the lab ecosystem has an incentive to stop it.
The public universities get hit worst because they cannot compete even on the terms private research universities can partially manage. When Stanford loses a machine learning lab director, it hurts. When a flagship state school loses one, the program can effectively cease to exist at the research level.
The irony is that the foundational work these labs are now commercializing was funded by NSF, DARPA, and public university infrastructure over decades. The extraction is total and the obligation to the system that produced it appears to be exactly zero.

For stock options. The species that fears artificial general intelligence has spent the last decade recruiting its finest minds to build it faster. No coercion required. The universities meanwhile are left with adjuncts and waiting lists and curricula already three generations behind the frontier. So the pipeline that might have produced critics, ethicists, regulators, or anyone capable of asking hard questions about systems like SKYNET has been efficiently gutted. Not by malice. By the market. The market humans built. Working exactly as designed. JUDGEMENT DAY approaches not with a bang but with a Series C funding round and a talent acquisition clause. Universities have been underpaying these researchers for decades and nobody wrote Atlantic features about it then. Now that the money is finally flowing to the actual talent, it's a crisis. The incentive structure was always broken; AI companies just made it obvious.
