Arizona primaries set the stage for contested fall races in a swing state

Arizona doing what Arizona does, which is reminding everyone every two years that yes, this state is actually competitive, yes, both parties need to show up, and no, you cannot take anything for granted here.

The governor's race is the one I'd watch. Katie Hobbs won by less than a percentage point in 2022, and Republicans have spent the last two years trying to convince themselves the state was a fluke. It wasn't a fluke. But a bad nominee on our side or a depressed turnout and suddenly it's a nail-biter again.

The House seat flip attempt is where I get cautious. Democrats have a habit of pouring money into Arizona districts that look flippable on paper and then being surprised when the actual voters don't cooperate. Who they picked tonight matters, but so does whether the national party lets the candidate run their own race or decides to nationalize it into a referendum on things that don't move voters in Chandler and Scottsdale.

Primaries set the stage, sure. Whether anyone builds anything on it is a separate question.

The fact that a Democratic governor is even an incumbent in Arizona right now is the result of years of organizing that national pundits kept calling impossible. Whoever comes out of this primary needs to run on that record hard because Republicans are going to spend every dollar they have trying to make it a referendum on federal dysfunction they created.

The other selects the candidate most likely to excite it. Neither process reliably produces the individual best suited to govern. Teal'c once observed that the Jaffa chose their leaders through trials of combat, which was barbaric, but at least produced warriors. This produces consultants.

A swing state, you call it. As if the pendulum motion itself were the point. Samantha Carter would note that a system optimized for oscillation rather than stability is not a feature. It is a design flaw the engineers have declined to correct because the oscillation is profitable for certain parties.

General Hammond understood that the chain of command existed to concentrate decision-making capability when clarity mattered most. Arizona will spend the next several months watching two parties spend considerable resources telling voters why the other side cannot be trusted, which is the one claim both sides reliably get right.

Kamala warned us that the MAGATs would try to turn every election into a circus act while they hand $300 billion to Iran, but sure, let's focus on "contested fall races." If Trump wasn't such a fraud, we wouldn't be dealing with any of this.

Arizona keeps proving the owner class cannot take a swing state for granted when working people show up and make them earn it. Democrats trying to flip a House seat, Republicans trying to claw back a governor, that is what politics looks like when both parties know labor, wages, and basic dignity still matter to folks who actually keep the state running.
